Our Cause
Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) benefit greatly from individual giving, which is always the largest component of charitable contributions, and was an estimated $229 billion or 75% of the total giving in 2008. Gifts to Health organizations are estimated to be $21.64 billion or 7% of total estimated giving, and a decline of 6.5% for this subsector.

In addition to declining giving to Health related NPOs and causes, we believe that corporations can do more. Corporate giving is estimated to equal only 5% of all charitable giving and projected to have decreased 4.5% in 2008 to $14.5 billion.

Additional support is needed because the state of children's health in the U.S. is not good. In 2008, there were an estimated 73,901,733 children living in the United States, and many faced daily struggles.

In the United States:
- A child is born into poverty every 33 seconds
- A child is abused or neglected every 35 seconds
- A child is born uninsured every 39 seconds
- A child dies before his or her first birthday every 18 minutes

Child welfare in the United States:
- Number of poor children: 13,324,000 or 18%
- Number of children living in extreme poverty: 5,768,000 or 7.8%
- Number of children without health insurance: 8.9 million or 11.3%
- Number of children who are victims of abuse and neglect: 905,000

Handkind is working to increase corporate involvement and support of children's health. It is a national issue and NPOs provide essential support services. See How to Help to learn more about volunteering or Sponsors for sponsorship information.
